Wind Creek Hospitality, a subsidiary of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, is set to acquire the Birmingham Racecourse and Casino in Alabama. The sale, expected to close in early 2025, marks the latest expansion for the rapidly growing tribal gaming company.

The Birmingham Racecourse Casino will continue to operate as a parimutuel wagering facility, with an emphasis on HHR games, following the acquisition. The casino currently features about 300 slot-like gaming terminals, making it a popular destination for gaming enthusiasts in the region.

While the Poarch Band of Creek Indians have not announced plans for an on-site hotel and other resort amenities at the Birmingham Racecourse Casino, they have already invested in such facilities at their other Alabama properties. Wind Creek Atmore, Wind Creek Montgomery, and Wind Creek Wetumpka all offer a range of amenities, including hotels, entertainment venues, event spaces, and restaurants.

Wind Creek Chicago Southland, a casino in Illinois operated by Wind Creek Hospitality, is a testament to the company's commitment to expansion. The casino features a 70,000-square-foot casino, 1,400 slot machines, a poker room, and a sportsbook. In addition, Wind Creek Hospitality is making ongoing investments at Wind Creek Bethlehem, a full-scale casino in Pennsylvania.

The acquisition of the Birmingham Racecourse Casino comes as other casinos in Alabama face closure due to a Supreme Court ruling. However, Victoryland, another casino owned by the McGregor family, remains open due to its parimutuel license. The McGregor family plans to focus their efforts on Victoryland and advocate for unified gaming legislation in Alabama.

The Poarch Band of Creek Indians are one of the most charitable tribes in the nation, supporting numerous organizations in the Birmingham region. They have agreed not to apply for the Birmingham Racecourse property to be deemed as sovereign land, ensuring continuity for the local community.

The McGregor family has controlled the Birmingham Racecourse and Casino since 1992. Live greyhound racing at the track ceased in March 2020, and the casino has continued to operate as a gaming venue since then. The sale price for the property has not been disclosed.

The Birmingham Racecourse Casino will not be rebranded to Wind Creek Birmingham, allowing the casino to maintain its unique identity while benefiting from Wind Creek Hospitality's expertise and resources. The acquisition is a significant step forward for both Wind Creek Hospitality and the Birmingham community, and promises to bring exciting new developments to the region.
