Wimbledon 2025 Final Day Recap: Farewell to the Royal Box's Grand Display
The Royal Box at Wimbledon, a suite located inside Centre Court, played host to 74 esteemed guests during this year's tennis tournament. This century-old area, featuring dark green Lloyd Loom wicker chairs, has been a hub for British and overseas royal families, heads of government, tennis personalities, commercial partners, and other distinguished guests since 1922.
Invitations to sit in the Royal Box are by the discretion of the Chairman of the All England Club, currently Debbie Jevans, based on recommendations from the Organizing Committee and tennis bodies. The prestigious seating area offers VIP treatment, including access to the Clubhouse for lunch, tea, and drinks, but guests are expected to adhere to Wimbledon’s strict dress codes and conduct.
This year, Richard Branson, the Virgin Group founder, dressed in regulation navy with a white shirt and blue patterned tie, while the Prince of Wales opted for a white duck pants and a double-breasted navy blazer, forgoing a hat during the match. Virgin boss Branson, known for his island-wear, demonstrated a commitment to the formal attire expected at Wimbledon.
Notable attendees included Nicole Kidman, who gave a strong attempt to "out-ice" Conde Nast global director Anna Wintour in the Royal Box, and James Righton, aka Mr. Keira Knightley, who wore an unusual cream kit and a silver tie. The great and the good paused their busy lives for the duration of the matches, with the British royals demonstrating their expertise in maintaining decorum and respect for the players and the game.
The Prince and Princess of Wales, along with their two elder children, were also in attendance, with Prince George seated at the oak desk of the rail in the Royal Box. King Felipe VI of Spain, second cousin to Charles, wore a light cream bespoke jacket over grey trousers, while his countryman, tennis star Carlos Alcaraz, lost to Jannik Sinner during the match.
The Royal Box is six rows deep, and etiquette for royal guests and other occupants involves maintaining decorum and respect for the players and the game during matches. Matthew McConaughey, James Righton, and Andre Agassi were exceptions to the rule of wearing dark jackets, opting for more colourful attire.
The majority of men in the Royal Box wore dark jackets, with King Felipe VI of Spain, the Prince of Wales, and Prince George among them. Jannik Sinner made his Wimbledon balcony debut during the match, adding to the star-studded atmosphere of the Royal Box. This ensures that royal guests and other VIPs maintain the prestigious and traditional atmosphere that Wimbledon is known for.
Princess Catherine, dressed elegantly, sat next to Prince William in the Royal Box, just as King Felipe of Spain and his countryman, tennis star Carlos Alcaraz, did. Notable tennis personality Jannik Sinner, wearing a colorful outfit, joined Matthew McConaughey, Anna Wintour, and other celebrities like Nicole Kidman and Richard Branson, in the prestigious seating area during this year's Wimbledon tennis tournament.
