In a bid to prevent President Donald Trump from agreeing to Putin's demands, including the handover of Ukrainian territory to Russia, European allies are set to rally behind President Volodymyr Zelensky during his upcoming meeting at the White House on August 18, 2025.

The meeting, scheduled three days after the historic summit between Trump and Putin on the situation in Ukraine, follows the Alaska summit between the two leaders. European leaders, including President Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, will be present to support Zelensky and ensure Ukraine's vital interests and EU security are protected.

Key concerns and expectations include ensuring any peace deal includes clear and credible U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine, avoiding concessions that would favor Russia excessively, and proposing NATO-style collective defense guarantees for Ukraine to reassure long-term security. The European coalition also plans to deploy a reassurance force after hostilities cease, support rebuilding Ukraine’s military capabilities, and contribute to securing Ukraine’s territories and borders.

However, there remains some ambiguity around how Article 5 protections might be extended or limited for Ukraine, a key issue for European leaders. Moreover, there is a concern among experts that a repeat of the February scandal could occur during Zelensky's meeting with Trump, as the President has long insisted that Ukraine is in a weak position and should strike a deal with Russia.

Zelensky, aware of the risk of falling into another trap, will be accompanied by a group of European prime ministers and presidents during the meeting. The meeting at the White House is widely discussed in global media, with many experts fearing a repeat of the February scandal due to the meeting between Zelensky and Trump.

Despite these challenges, the European allies are hopeful that the U.S. will play a leading role in providing concrete security commitments to Ukraine to underpin peace negotiations and help Europe manage the conflict's security challenges, amid concerns about Russia’s intentions and the risk of unfavorable compromises. The meeting emphasizes transatlantic unity and underscores the urgency of a negotiated peace that is fair to Ukraine and secure for Europe.
