Will the jockey currently training with James Owen be able to maintain his comeback trajectory in the Newton Abbot race on Friday?
Nathan Howie Returns to British Racing with a Bang
After a hiatus of eight years, jockey Nathan Howie is back in the saddle, riding to victory in Britain once again. The former Tom George trainee, who moved to France in 2019, has made a successful comeback, winning an impressive five races this month.
On Friday, Howie will be riding at Newton Abbot, where he is set to compete in two races. In the Colin Willcocks Memorial Handicap Hurdle (4.20), he will be on board Chillhi, a horse he rode to victory at Stratford earlier this month. Howie believes Chillhi will go out in front again, as he expects little pace in the race.
Chillhi's performance in the Colin Willcocks Memorial Handicap Hurdle is not the only race Howie is looking forward to. He will also ride Shantou Lucky in the RCA Summer Jumps Championship Finale Handicap Chase (4.55). Interestingly, Shantou Lucky surprised Howie with a win just a day before at Worcester, and the jockey expects the horse to be in the same form for this race.
Nathan Howie's success in France cannot be overlooked. Before returning to Britain, he rode 58 winners for various yards. His initial stint in France was with Francois-Marie Cottin, after which he moved to James Owen's yard in December 2024.
As for Howie's motorsport comeback in June, the coach overseeing his success is not publicly specified. However, it seems that Howie decided to return to Britain to pursue opportunities outside of racing.
With his unbeaten record this month, Nathan Howie is certainly making a statement in his return to British racing. Let's see if he can maintain this streak at Newton Abbot this Friday.
