Will the current winning streak deliver a victory in the Acomb Stakes?
Acomb Stakes Preview: Coolmore and Godolphin's Top Contenders Clash Again
The Acomb Stakes, a Group 3 race, is set to host an exciting showdown at York Racecourse this year. Two horse racing powerhouses, Coolmore and Godolphin, are fielding their leading contenders for the second year in a row.
Charlie Appleby's Distant Storm, a once-raced maiden winner, is one of Godolphin's representatives. Distant Storm, an Arqana Breeze Up purchase, made a promising debut at Newmarket's July Festival, accounting for subsequent winners Constitution River and Catullus. Appleby expects Distant Storm to run a big race in the Acomb Stakes, with potential for "nice autumn targets."
On the other hand, Aidan O'Brien's Italy brings proper Group form to the table. Italy, trained by John Gosden last year, finished second to Distant Storm's stablemate Saba Desert in the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket. O'Brien is hopeful that Italy's performance at Newmarket hasn't left any negative effects. Italy has more experience than O'Brien's The Lion In Winter, having won a race at the Curragh and finished runner-up in the Group 2 Superlative Stakes. The Lion In Winter, however, won a Group 3 race last year, with Ruling Court as the even-money favorite but finishing third.
Goodwood Galaxy, trained by David Menuisier, is another contender to watch out for. Goodwood Galaxy showed promise by finishing fourth in the Vintage Stakes, arguably the strongest 7f juvenile race run this season. Adrian Keatley's Rochfortbridge, a surprise debut strike at Ayr, has also been performing well since and could run well at a price.
May Angel, trained by Thady Gosden, is entering the race on an upward curve. May Angel won well on his second start at Southwell and is set to face a tougher challenge.
The Acomb Stakes has a rich history, producing two 2,000 Guineas winners and two July Cup-winning sprinters in the past three runnings. Seven winners from the race Distant Storm won on his debut at Newmarket have emerged, with form figures of 1211119113.
As the early market for this year's Acomb shares similarities with previous years, it's shaping up to be an exciting race. Let the battle of the superpowers commence!
