Will it be a white Christmas in Massachusetts? Forecast maps show who could get snow on Tuesday.
A fast-moving storm will sweep across the upper Midwest and New England on Tuesday. The system, known as a 'clipper', is set to bring light snow to parts of the region, with the heaviest falls expected during the day. Meanwhile, Christmas Day in Massachusetts looks calm and seasonal, with only a slight chance of rain.
The Tuesday storm will favour central and northern New England for snowfall. Areas farther south may see a wintry mix instead. Boston and the south shore have a 20% chance of a white Christmas, but odds improve to 40% near the 495 corridor and 60% northwest of the city. A white Christmas is officially defined as at least one inch of snow on the ground by 7 a.m. on Christmas morning.
Elsewhere, the Pacific Northwest and Northern California could face difficult travel conditions early next week. In contrast, Massachusetts will experience quieter weather on Christmas Day, with highs in the low to mid-40s and only a stray sprinkle possible. The storm’s light snow accumulation will mostly occur during Tuesday’s daytime hours. While it may dust the ground, forecasts suggest it won’t linger long enough to guarantee a snowy holiday for most areas.
The clipper system will pass quickly, leaving behind only minor snow in parts of New England. Christmas Day itself will remain dry and mild for Massachusetts, with little disruption expected. Travel conditions in the Pacific Northwest, however, may prove more hazardous in the days ahead.
