Kentucky's Hunter Education Day is an annual statewide event that takes place in August, providing a unique opportunity for new hunters to prepare for the fall hunting season. This year, the event is scheduled for August 2, 2025, and will feature 20 in-person hunter education classes combined with live-fire range sessions across various locations in Kentucky.
The event aims to equip participants with essential knowledge on hunter ethics, wildlife conservation and identification, firearm safety, archery, muzzleloading, field care of game, and basic first aid. It is particularly beneficial for young hunters, with in-person courses and range days open to participants who are at least 9 years old.
Registration is mandatory for in-person Hunter Education courses and range days. To participate, you must register in advance through the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources website. On the day of the event, attend one of the scheduled classes and live-fire range days at one of the 20 locations across the state.
During the course, you will be required to complete a written test and a live-fire exercise. All necessary equipment will be provided, and registered participants will be given equipment at no charge for use during testing at the ranges.
For those who prefer an online option, Kentucky offers a hybrid hunter education course where the online portion is completed first, followed by an in-person live-fire range day scheduled separately.
It is important to note that, according to Kentucky law, anyone born on or after January 1, 1975, and age 12 or older is required to have completed a one-time hunter education course to legally hunt in the state. Hunter education certificates from other states are recognised in Kentucky.
Kentucky's fall hunting season begins in mid-August, and a hunting license appropriate for the hunting activity is required for all hunters in Kentucky. Species-specific permits are also necessary for hunting deer, wild turkeys, bear, bobcats, and sandhill cranes.
