Wildfire Spreads to Brandenburg from Gohrischheide Forest - Shifting Winds
Forest Fire Rages on in Gohrisch Heath
A forest fire continues to burn in the Gohrisch Heath nature reserve, located in Saxony near the border with Brandenburg. As of the latest reports, approximately 650 personnel are involved in extinguishing efforts on Saturday.
The fire has been spreading in several areas, and the situation is described as dynamic. Firefighters are working tirelessly to contain the blaze, with four fire-fighting helicopters and two water cannons deployed to help combat the vegetation fire.
To aid in the efforts, specialists from Saxony-Anhalt have been requested to assist, and Brandenburg has offered an automated fire truck and taken over the air coordination for helicopter deployments. The German army tank is also set to be deployed at the barracks in Zeithain to widen an already cleared firebreak.
Deployment forces are awaiting information from satellite images to determine the extent of the forest fire, which will be evaluated in the evening hours. In Nieska, efforts are currently focused on securing the road between Nieska and Heidehäuser.
The highest forest fire risk in northern Saxony, including the Gohrisch heath, has again reached warning level 5. Despite the ongoing efforts, the fire has been slowly approaching Kosilenzien, a district of Bad Liebenwerda in Brandenburg, but there is no immediate danger reported.
In recent days, there have been differing reports on the extent of the forest fire, with firefighters on-site reporting a size of around 1,000 hectares. The district administration reported 200 hectares as the extent of the forest fire on Thursday.
Smoke plumes from the forest fire reached Berlin due to a wind shift towards Brandenburg. The Nina warning app issued a warning for increased smoke and odor pollution in several Brandenburg districts, but no new information about the smoke plumes or the Nina warning app is provided.
It is worth noting that, while there is no specific information available about a forest fire in Gohrisch Heath as of today's date, a recent forest fire was reported in the Dresdner Heide, which is located in the north of Dresden, Saxony. That fire, which covered an area of approximately 2,400 square meters, was under control as of July 1, 2025, although it was not fully extinguished and firefighting efforts were paused due to darkness.
As the firefighting efforts continue, we will keep you updated on the progress and any new developments related to the forest fire in Gohrisch Heath. Stay safe and stay informed.
