Wildfire rages near Okhotsk as dry grass fuels rapid spread

A wildfire has been burning near Okhotsk in Russia’s Khabarovsk Territory for more than a day. The blaze began in the Orbita area, where dry grass quickly caught fire. By midday, flames had already spread across 12 hectares of land.

The fire started in a patch of dry grass, covering five hectares at first. Despite the official wildfire season ending on November 17, the risk remains high due to the lack of stable snow cover in the region. Okhotsk has yet to see consistent snowfall this season, leaving dry vegetation exposed.

Local authorities have warned residents to take extra care. Maxim Klimov, head of the Okhotsk District, urged people to avoid discarding cigarette butts or burning dry grass. His message stressed the need for vigilance to prevent the fire from spreading further.

The wildfire continues to grow, now affecting 12 hectares of land. With no snow cover to slow its progress, officials are calling for caution. The situation highlights ongoing risks even after the official wildfire season has ended.
