Smoldering Flames in Jüterbog: Experts Stay Hopeful
The intense wildfire in Jüterbog continues to rage unabated, despite fire department efforts. The blaze has expanded to an estimated 67 hectares from yesterday's 51-hectare figure, as announced by the fire department's spokesperson. Two fire engines and a helicopter deploying water are currently engaged in the fight against the blaze, with a team of 32 individuals working tirelessly on the frontlines.
Calm the storm, reassures Brandenburg's forest fire chief, Raimund Engel, to inquiries from the German Press Agency. He asserts there's no immediate cause for alarm as the fire hasn't encroached upon residential areas or critical infrastructure in the area. Engel, however, warns that the fire may advance toward the control lines—wide, accessible paths crafted for firefighting vehicles. At present, the flames have not broken through the containment lines.
Engel voices concerns about the potential for the fire to breach the control lines, particularly in the narrow spots. Firefighters are prepared to take every measure possible to prevent this scenario from unfolding. "I remain optimistic," Engel adds.
The wildfire that sparked on an ex-military training ground encompassing Jüterbog raises additional challenges for the firefighting teams. The possibility of buried military explosives further complicates the already formidable task. Air support was enlisted on Thursday.
As a stark reminder, last year a fire swallowed up approximately 700 hectares in the same region. The firefighters were present for several days. Extensive aerial firefighting techniques were employed, and there was also a fire in the same forest area in mid-August.
The flames in Jüterbog march forward, and the concealed military ordnance adds an extra layer of complexity to the firefighting mission. The risk of the fire bursting through the control lines lingers as a significant worry.
