In Rivers State, Minister Nyesom Wike has addressed concerns regarding the absence of Governor Siminalayi Fubara following the expiration of the six-month emergency rule. Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has clarified that there is no law requiring Fubara to immediately return to office.

Wike emphasised that governance extends beyond physical presence in the office and that the governor has the prerogative to determine when and how he resumes official duties. He explained that being sworn in as governor does not mean one must start working the next day.

The emergency rule in Rivers State was declared by President Bola Tinubu six months ago, suspending Fubara, his deputy, and members of the Rivers House of Assembly. During this period, Vice-Admiral Ibot Ekwe Ibas was appointed as Sole Administrator, a move that was heavily criticised by many political elites.

Despite the lifting of the emergency rule, Fubara has not been seen in public since his reinstatement. Supporters stormed the Rivers Government House to welcome the governor, but he was not present. The Rivers House of Assembly members convened plenary, but neither Fubara nor his deputy attended.

Wike clarified that he is not Fubara's protocol officer or Chief Security Officer, implying that he does not have control over the governor's whereabouts or activities. Tonye Cole, who was interviewed by journalists after the dispute between Wike and Fubara, also did not provide any insight into Fubara's whereabouts or plans.

President Tinubu ordered Fubara, his deputy, and the lawmakers to resume duties at the expiration of the emergency rule. The emergency rule is set to expire at midnight according to the President. Wike reiterated that governance does not require one to be in the office to govern, and that his personal programs and where Fubara is are unknown to him.

As the situation continues to unfold, the people of Rivers State await the return of their governor and the resumption of normal governance. The absence of Fubara has raised questions about the state of governance in the region and the role of key political figures in the state.
