Wiesbaden Paralyzed as Heavy Snowstorm Shuts Down Roads and Buses
A sudden snowstorm struck Wiesbaden on February 3, bringing heavy snowfall that caused widespread traffic chaos. Bus services ground to a halt, and drivers faced hours of delays as roads became impassable. Emergency crews worked around the clock to clear the worst-affected areas.
The snowstorm hit Hesse hard, with Wiesbaden bearing the brunt of the disruption. Stranded cars and overturned lorries blocked key routes, slowing down snowploughs trying to reach affected areas. Many drivers were stuck in standstills for hours as visibility dropped and roads turned hazardous.
The city's road maintenance team, ELW, sent out every available snowplough and gritting truck. They spread 150 tons of salt across nearly 2,000 roads in and around Wiesbaden. Despite their efforts, continuous snowfall forced crews to repeatedly clear the same stretches, delaying progress.
Public transport suffered too, as bus services were suspended for safety reasons. ELW focused first on clearing emergency routes and bus lanes, but the sheer volume of snow made it a slow and difficult task.
The snowstorm left Wiesbaden's transport network severely disrupted, with roads clogged and buses out of service. While ELW worked to restore access, the heavy and persistent snow kept conditions dangerous. No further updates on road or transport recovery were available after the storm.
