"Wide-Awake Inquiry: Prime Minister Inquired Late-Night About Indian Embassy Assault", Minister Reminisces

In New York, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar is currently attending the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly. During a recent interview, he shared insights into his relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the latter's leadership during critical situations.

Jaishankar revealed that he had always admired Modi before they met. This admiration was further reinforced when Modi called him during an attack on an Indian consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan, in 2016. Modi expressed his condolences for the victims and vowed to enhance India's commitment to fighting terrorism.

During the same interview, Jaishankar commended Modi for his sense of responsibility and extensive level of preparation. He also spoke about Modi's quick response during critical situations, citing the Prime Minister's call during the attack as an example.

The Foreign Minister also touched upon India's evacuation efforts from Afghanistan in 2014, but did not provide specific details about his meeting with the Taliban at that time. He did, however, highlight India's ability to take essential decisions during the more recent Covid crisis, without delving into specific decisions made.

When asked about Modi's micromanaging, Jaishankar did not mention any specific instances. Instead, he commended Modi for taking a call during critical situations and for his personal interest in being informed about the resolution of the situation in Afghanistan.

Jaishankar also recalled the Prime Minister's first concern during their conversation, which was whether he was conscious and watching television to keep abreast of the situation. The Foreign Minister assured him that he was, and that he was trying to figure out what was happening during the attack.

As the UN General Assembly continues, Jaishankar has been meeting with envoys and presidents from around the world on the sidelines, discussing various international issues and strengthening India's diplomatic relations. He also stated that the process of his current engagements would take a few more hours, after which he would notify the Prime Minister's office.

The attack on the Indian consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif occurred some years back, but it serves as a reminder of Modi's quick and decisive leadership during crises. Jaishankar's praise for the Prime Minister underscores the strong bond between the two leaders and the respect they have for each other's abilities.
