Why US Airlines Like Delta and United Keep Setting the Safety Standard

Air travel in the US remains one of the safest ways to cover long distances. The National Safety Council even reported too few fatalities in 2023 to calculate lifetime odds for a passenger on a plane. Behind this record lie strict regulations and heavy investment by major airlines in safety measures.

Over the past five years, US carriers have faced some of the toughest oversight in the world. Airlines like Southwest, Delta, and United underwent frequent FAA audits under the Part 121 Safety Assurance System. Additional checks came from Special Federal Aviation Regulation 111 for COVID-19 operations and enhanced ramp inspections after the 2023 Alaska Airlines door plug incident. These rules go beyond international standards by requiring data-driven risk assessments, annual internal audits, and real-time incident reporting.

Delta Air Lines stands out for its long-standing safety record, with no fatal passenger accidents in decades. The airline invests heavily in pilot training, simulator sessions, and updating its fleet. American Airlines also strengthens safety by monitoring thousands of flight parameters on every journey.

Hawaiian Airlines operates some of the longest overwater routes, demanding rigorous emergency planning. Its safety record shows no recent fatal incidents. Alaska Airlines, meanwhile, responded swiftly to the 2024 door plug issue with immediate inspections across its fleet. The carrier also ranks highly for reliability and customer satisfaction.

United Airlines collaborates closely with the FAA and NTSB to investigate incidents thoroughly. These efforts ensure that any potential risks are identified and addressed quickly.

The combination of strict FAA oversight and airline initiatives keeps US air travel exceptionally safe. With advanced training, real-time monitoring, and rapid responses to incidents, carriers continue to maintain high standards. Passengers benefit from systems designed to minimise risk at every stage of a flight.
