Hugh Grant's reign as the king of romantic comedies in the '90s and early 2000s, with movies like "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and "Notting Hill," has faded into the past. But don't shed a tear just yet, fans. The British acting legend is thriving in a variety of roles these days.
During an appearance on "The Drew Barrymore Show," Grant joked about his age and physical appearance, explaining why he's moved away from romantic comedies. "I was obviously getting too old and fat and ugly to do romantic comedies," he quipped. "So I was offered more interesting stuff."
Getting older may have given him a few extra pounds, but it's also provided him with more fulfilling work. The father of five and husband to actress Anna Eberstein has seen an improvement in his acting skills. "I've gotten a little bit better," he told Barrymore in an interview. "I got a little less bad after I had kids, got married, and became happier."
Grant's career transformation is evident in the movies and TV shows he's been involved in since 2012. He appeared in the science-fiction epic "Cloud Atlas" and the romantic drama "Love," followed by character roles in films like "Codename U.N.C.L.E." and "Florence Foster Jenkins," and series like "A Very English Scandal" and "The Undoing."
Barrymore, who worked with Grant on several romantic comedies, hasn't given up hope on seeing him return to his favorite genre. "We have to do another one," she teased the actor during their interview. "Maybe even together." The duo starred together in "A Song for You" back in 2007.
So, while Hugh Grant may have left his rom-com days behind, he's certainly not resting on his laurels. He's continuing to challenge himself as an actor and entertain audiences with his versatility. And who knows - maybe a romantic comedy comeback is in the cards for this beloved British star.
