Why in the world didn't anyone halt him?

Rottweil - The emerald Kawasaki is trapped in the passenger side of a BMW, shards of metal and glass scatter across the country road. Siegfried S. (76) stumbles out of his BMW, alive but breathless. However, his passenger (63) and the motorcyclist (20) pay the ultimate price.

After the heart-wrenching incident, the 76-year-old, who doesn't even possess a driver's license, faces charges of involuntary manslaughter at the Rottweil district court.

Investigators examining the scene of the accident and collecting evidence

The intriguing question: Why didn't anyone stop him? Siegfried S. has been previously convicted six times for driving without a license.

The experienced car mechanic was responsible for the collision on September 2, 2021. He attempted to turn left from the country road onto his company premises near Pfalzgrafenweiler (Freudenstadt district) at night. Motorcyclist Robert B. approached from the opposite lane, crashed into the passenger door of the BMW - and met his end. For co-driver Peter F., help arrived too late.

Peter F. (✝︎ 67) was in the passenger seat during the accident. BILD received the photo from his family and has published it with their consent

Will Siegfried S. spend time behind bars for the accidental deaths of two innocent souls? At first instance, he received 15 months without the possibility of parole. He's appealing the decision.

Defense attorney Sasha Bokhari's main argument is that an expert analysis supports the claim that motorcyclist Robert B. was traveling at least 120 kilometers per hour instead of the allowed 70. If this holds true, it raises questions about whether Siegfried S. could have prevented the collision. Bokhari demands that his client only be penalized for driving without a license with a suspended sentence.

Judge Thomas Geiger will review the expert's testimony on December 14 before passing judgment. However, he has already conveyed his opinion to the defendant: he sees no chance of probation due to the previous convictions. Driving without a license alone carries too much weight.

Siegfried S. remained silent throughout the trial, focusing on the tabletop.

  1. Despite knowing about Siegfried S.'s history of driving without a license, no other motorist felt compelled to stop him before the tragic traffic accident that resulted in two unnecessary deaths near Freudenstadt.
  2. The Rottweil Regional Court is currently overseeing the case of the traffic accident near Pfalzgrafenweiler, where Siegfried S. is charged with involuntary manslaughter for the accidental deaths that occurred.
  3. Latest updates in the trial for the fatal traffic accident in Rottweil reveal that an expert witness will be consulted to analyze the motorcyclist's speed. Should the results exonerate Siegfried S., his sentence for the driving without a license charge could be significantly reduced.

Addressing the Question: Why didn't anyone stop him?

Many factors may contribute to why no one intervened to prevent the accident:

  1. Fear of Confrontation: Some individuals may be hesitant to interfere in potentially volatile situations, fearing physical confrontation or reprisals from the driver.
  2. Lack of Training: Not everyone is prepared with the knowledge or skills to intervene safely in traffic situations, especially if the other driver appears unstable.
  3. Assuming Authorities Will Handle It: Motorists may believe that law enforcement or other authorities will eventually intervene, so they refrain from taking matters into their own hands.
  4. Distraction and Lack of Awareness: Driving can be distracting, making it hard for drivers to notice and respond to dangerous driving behavior, especially at high speeds.
  5. Cultural and Social Factors: Cultural norms and societal attitudes towards intervention can impact individuals' decisions. Some cultures promote letting authorities handle the situation.
  6. Fear of Liability: There's a concern about potential liability if one intervenes and something goes wrong. This fear can deter individuals from getting involved.
  7. Speed and Distance: High-speed situations can make it challenging for drivers to observe and react to each other’s actions quickly due to the distance between vehicles.
