White House Frittering Away Voter Trust on Immigration Policy

Agencies under increased pressure to achieve Trump's unprecedented deportation objectives shift focus towards locating and deporting the most accessible immigrants.

The Grim Reality of Trump's Deportation Policies

White House Frittering Away Voter Trust on Immigration Policy

With a stern promise of rapid deportations for undocumented immigrants, Donald Trump took the presidential seat and promptly overstepped his bounds on immigration. After just 100 days, a majority (53%) disapprove of Trump's handling of this signature issue, according to an AP-NORC poll.

The administration's severe deportation tactics have failed to distinguish between legal immigrants and illegal ones, or between those with criminal records and minor visa issues. These blurred lines are stirring turmoil among Americans, undermining the president's backing and casting a shadow over his key achievement - tightening the southern border.

As pressure mounts on agencies to meet Trump's unrealistic deportation targets, they resort to taking down the easiest targets. This list includes international students, green card holders, tourists, cancer researchers, doctors, and more.

These tactics are brutal and often border on illegality. A Turkish student was snatched from a bustling street corner and crammed into a van by masked agents. Mothers and their American-born children are detained on the spot at mandatory immigration check-ins. The wife of an active-duty Coast Guardsman was arrested over an expired visa. A four-year-old battling stage four cancer was deported. Rare are those who receive the hearings guaranteed by the Constitution.

In one of the most egregious cases, Mohsen Mahdawi, a permanent resident and Palestinian refugee, was arrested during his final interview before gaining citizenship - a long-sought goal. He was eventually released by a judge last week.

Americans are baffled. They expected a crackdown on undocumented immigrants, not nursing mothers.

Some of Trump's aggressive moves aren't even popular with Republican voters. For instance, sending American citizens to prisons in El Salvador is met with vehement opposition from 73% of all voters, and 56% of Republicans. Yet, Trump's Justice Department is reportedly working on such a plan.

Such actions blatantly contradict the American values of fairness. The arbitrary nature of some arrests punishes those striving hardest to abide by the law. Missing an immigration check-in invites ICE to hunt you down and arrest you, while cooperating now comes with the same consequence.

Similarly, Trump has targeted those admitted under President Biden's broadened refugee and asylum programs, though they helped shrink illegal border crossings. Trump maintains that these programs were illegitimate, but the new administration now knows exactly where these immigrants are, making them easier to deport.

Trump's aggressive approach to immigration has been relentless, invading various federal agencies, constantly challenging the courts, advocating for the end of birthright citizenship, and detaining visa holders for minor infractions. A more targeted approach could have maintained public support while reducing border crossings.

And border crossings have plummeted. In a recent briefing, Border Patrol officials stated they had arrested 7,200 people in March. In December 2023, the monthly figure was 250,000. "We have the most secure border in the history of this nation, and the numbers prove it," said border czar Tom Homan.

However, the same could have been achieved with more compassion and respect for the rule of law.
