The White House has made a surprising foray into the world of TikTok, launching an official account on Tuesday afternoon. In a bid to communicate its successes with a wide audience, the Trump administration has joined the popular social media platform.

The White House's TikTok account, @whitehouse, has already gained a significant following, with the caption on its first video reading, "America we are BACK! What's up TikTok?" The video features President Donald Trump in various rallies and notable appearances.

The creation of the White House's TikTok account comes nearly four years after President Trump issued an executive order to ban the app. However, on his first day in office, Trump signed an executive order directing the Justice Department to not enforce the TikTok ban for 75 days. This was followed by two 75-day extensions and a third 90-day extension, pushing the final deadline to September 17, 2025.

The ongoing negotiations to keep TikTok operational in the U.S. through a sale of its American operations have made the app's future uncertain. TikTok, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, faced a U.S. ban due to national security concerns over Chinese government potential access to U.S. user data. Congress passed a law in 2024 requiring ByteDance to divest TikTok’s U.S. assets by January 19, 2025, or face a ban.

Trump’s administration has been actively negotiating a sale of TikTok to U.S. investors, but concerns remain about approval from Beijing and complexities heightened by Trump’s tariffs on China. The sale before the September deadline appears uncertain, and some lawmakers criticize the extensions as undermining national security. TikTok has tried legal challenges, but courts have denied these moves, and the Supreme Court has upheld the ban—though Trump’s extensions have delayed enforcement.

President Trump's personal TikTok account, @realdonaldtrump, has been a significant part of his 2024 presidential campaign. Launched in June 2024, the account has more than 15 million followers. Kai Trump, a granddaughter of President Donald Trump, gained stardom on TikTok after her appearance at the 2024 Republican National Convention.

Alexandra Koch, a digital journalist who covers breaking news, with a focus on high-impact events that shape national conversation and influence government response, commented on the White House's TikTok presence, saying, "This is a new way for the administration to communicate, and it's clear they aim to do so in a way no other administration has before." The White House's TikTok account bio reads "Welcome to the Golden Age of America."
