White House embraces TikTok platform, establishing an official account under the slogan 'We're back!'

The White House has taken a surprising turn by joining TikTok, the popular social media platform, marking a significant shift in the administration's stance towards the app. This move comes four years after President Trump issued an executive order to potentially ban TikTok.

The journey to this point has been a tumultuous one. In June 2020, President Trump signed an executive order to keep TikTok running in the U.S. for another 90 days. This was followed by another extension on January 20, 2021, the first day of his presidency, after the platform went dark briefly when a national ban took effect. The most recent extension was on August 11, 2025, marking the third time Trump has granted TikTok more time to sell its U.S. assets or face a ban.

The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, stated that the Trump administration is committed to communicating President Trump's successes to various audiences and platforms, including TikTok. The official account, @WhiteHouse, launched on Tuesday, and the first video posted shows footage of Trump declaring, "Every day, I wake up determined to deliver a better life for the people all across this nation. I am your voice."

The account's bio reads, "Welcome to the Golden Age of America." The second video on the account shows images of the White House, while the third video is a montage of Trump, featuring clips of him dancing, sitting in a Tesla on the lawn of the White House, and speaking to crowds at rallies and other notable appearances.

However, this move has not been without controversy. Democratic Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia has criticized the Trump administration for flouting the law and ignoring national security concerns related to Chinese control over TikTok. A 2024 law required TikTok to stop operating by January 19 of this year unless ByteDance had completed divesting the app's U.S. assets or demonstrated significant progress toward a sale.

Despite these concerns, TikTok has expressed gratitude for President Trump's leadership and support in ensuring the platform remains available for American users. It remains to be seen how this development will unfold in the coming days, but one thing is certain: the White House's presence on TikTok is set to shake up the political landscape on the platform.

Meanwhile, President Trump's previous TikTok account, @realdonaldtrump, continues to have more than 15 million followers. The White House's TikTok account is poised to build upon the successes of Trump's previous presence on the platform during his presidential campaign. As the deadline for TikTok's Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the popular social media platform or face a ban in the U.S. approaches, the White House's commitment to TikTok is clear.
