Whitcoff's planned visit to Moscow has been disclosed by Washington.
The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine is set to be a focus of attention as U.S. Special Envoy Stephen Biegun travels to Moscow this weekend. According to reports, Biegun's visit comes following a reduction of the deadline for Moscow, announced by President Trump, from 50 days to 10-12 days, with the new deadline being August 8.
Washington's representative at the United Nations, John Kelly, has emphasised the need for an immediate resolution to the conflict. President Trump himself has been clear that the conflict will not be resolved on the battlefield, but through negotiations. As Matthew Whitaker, the U.S. Representative to NATO, stated, Trump is a peacemaker.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested that serious conversations should be held privately to approach a peaceful solution to the issue. He commented on Trump's "disappointment," stating that "all disappointments arise from excessive expectations."
While details about Biegun's planned negotiations in Moscow are scarce, it is known that he has significant experience in diplomatic negotiations, especially related to nuclear nonproliferation and talks with North Korea. Biegun has made four visits to Moscow in recent months, on February 1, March 13, April 11, and April 25.
During his trip, Biegun also visited the Gaza Strip. Several meetings with Russian representatives are planned, but the specific focus of these talks remains unclear. A representative has suggested that the U.S.'s selling of American weapons to NATO allies aims to "force Russia back to the negotiating table and ensure a lasting ceasefire."
As the deadline for a resolution approaches, the international community will be watching closely to see if Biegun's visit to Moscow can bring about a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
