Sticky Roads Alert: DWD Issues "Slip Risk" Warning Across Germany
Germany's meteorological service, the German Weather Service (DWD), has issued a warning for icy roads across various parts of the country. Overnight, slippery conditions have prompted a region-wide alert from Jade Bay to Lake Constance, encompassing western Germany's border up to Hanover, Erfurt, and Ulm.
The warning includes both icy rain and light snowfall in affected areas, where temperatures will drop to −5 degrees in the west and −9 degrees in the south and southeastern part of Germany. The DWD predicts freezing rain in western regions, ranging from the Eifel to Sauerland and East Westphalia, with potential hazards for road traffic.
The weather service continues to monitor the situation until midday on Friday in most parts and until 3 pm in parts of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. In the event of freezing rain, snowfall within the mountain ranges could reach anywhere from 1 to 5 centimeters.
A Word of Caution
To keep public safe, the DWD advises limiting outdoor activities and journeys. Adjusting road traffic behavior and planning for delays and obstructions would be beneficial, especially for those with the opportunity to work from home.
Due to the ongoing strike by train drivers, alternative travel options are scarce, as switching to train commuting is hardly feasible in many areas. A spokesperson from ADAC advises individuals to make the most of remote work options and prepare for limited transportation alternatives.
