Which Sealant Sealed the Largest Gap in our Screwdriver Test for Tubeless Sealants in 2025?
In the realm of cycling, maintaining a well-functioning tubeless setup is paramount for both gravel and road bikes. As tubeless setups become more standard, the importance of high-quality, long-lasting sealants cannot be overstated. A recent test compared five tubeless sealants to determine the top performers for 2025.
The test, conducted by deliberately puncturing a tyre with six screwdrivers of increasing size (1mm to 7mm), aimed to measure the pressure at which each sealant could no longer hold. The control tyre used was a Schwalbe Pro One 28mm tyre fitted to a Zipp 303s wheel.
The standout overall winner was the Silca Ultimate Sealant. This sealant, renowned for its proprietary blend of natural and synthetic latex, enhanced with carbon fiber strands and foaming agents, demonstrated impressive sealing capabilities. It was capable of sealing punctures over 6mm in size and lasting up to 6+ months without drying out. The sealant's convenience is also noteworthy, as it can be injected through the valve for ease of use, making it highly effective on race day and long rides.
Muc-Off No Puncture Hassle was a strong runner-up, sealing up to the same puncture size as Silca Ultimate Sealant but with some limitations at higher pressures (struggles above 30 psi). It's more economical than Silca and suitable for gravel or wider road tyres, especially in less demanding sealing situations.
Orange Seal Regular Sealant performed well in smaller holes, but its temperature rating and longevity were less impressive compared to other models. It managed to plug holes up to and including 3mm at 70 psi, which is on par with both the Stans and Effetto Mariposa. However, at road pressures, it was only able to seal 3mm-sized holes.
Stans No Tubes Tubeless Tyre Sealant, while performing well in colder temperatures, did not offer top-of-the-range sealing performance. It claimed to be good for holes up to 6mm in diameter, but it was unable to plug punctures larger than 3mm at road pressures.
Effetto Mariposa's Vegétalex Tyre Sealant is eco-friendly, biodegradable, and has a claimed longevity of at least three months. It worked well up to 3mm-sized punctures but would only seal 4.5mm holes at low pressure.
The Vegétalex Tyre Sealant, unlike the Silca and the Muc-Off sealants, didn't seem to strengthen after being broken open. When trying to pump the tyre back to pressure, the hole kept on reopening with the Vegétalex seal.
In summary, the Silca Ultimate Sealant is currently the top choice for both road and gravel tubeless tyres in 2025, combining puncture protection, longevity, and ease of use. Muc Off’s sealant is a cost-effective alternative suited for slightly less demanding conditions.
