German households are stocking up on festive treats, but preferences vary sharply by region. New data reveals where gingerbread, speculoos, and Dominosteine are most popular—and where they barely make an appearance. Some areas consume nearly double the national average of certain baked goods.

Gingerbread leads the seasonal sales, with the national average sitting just under 350 grams per household. Franconia stands out as the top consumer, particularly Lower Franconia, where households eat 618 grams—78% above the national figure. Nearby, Upper Franconia (+60%) and the Upper Palatinate (+44%) also show strong demand.

Speculoos follows as the second most popular Christmas treat, averaging 290 grams per household nationwide. The Weser-Ems district in Lower Saxony leads consumption at 519 grams, a 79% increase over the national average. Detmold (+47%) and Münster (+44%) districts also report high sales. Meanwhile, Hamburg, Saarland, and Freiburg buy the least. Dominosteine, a layered marzipan and chocolate treat, sees its highest consumption in Schleswig-Holstein, where households eat 145 grams—51% above the 96-gram national average. Brandenburg (+43%) and Dresden (+30%) also show strong demand. Bremen, Hamburg, and Brunswick, however, purchase the least gingerbread of all regions.

The data highlights clear regional divides in festive snacking habits. While Franconia dominates gingerbread sales and Lower Saxony leads in speculoos, some cities like Hamburg and Bremen lag well behind. Nationwide, speculoos remains widely available in stores from September to December, with sales continuing to grow in 2025.
