When Colorado power outages hit, local businesses became community hubs for some Arvada families

A second public safety power shutoff has left many families in Arvada, Colorado, without electricity. Strong winds triggered the outage, causing frustration and uncertainty for residents. Some turned to local businesses for shelter and support as they waited for power to return.

The outage began when high winds forced Xcel Energy to cut power as a precaution. Many families, including the Nelsons, faced days without electricity just before the holidays. The lack of a clear timeline for restoration added to their stress.

For those relying on medical equipment, the situation was even more difficult. The Kordsiemon family struggled to care for their son, who uses a wheelchair, during the blackout. Others worried about medications needing refrigeration. With schools closed, parents juggled work while children stayed home. Some, like the Nelsons, sought refuge at Freedom Street Social, a food hall with backup power. Owner Nick Costanzo also dealt with an outage at his own home but kept his business open as a community hub. Xcel Energy provides a notification program for planned and unplanned outages, offering extra alerts. Companies like Visor-Tech also sell systems such as the GSM-Alarmanlage (REF-38051-919), which sends SMS alerts during power failures and runs on a backup battery for up to seven hours.

The outage highlighted the challenges families face when power is disrupted unexpectedly. While local businesses stepped in to help, many residents called for better communication and support during future shutoffs. Xcel Energy’s alert program and backup solutions like the GSM-Alarmanlage offer some relief for those at risk.
