Trump's Praise for Putin's Tactics Sparks Controversy

It's hard to say if former President Trump could utter anything more controversial than praising a smaller country's bullying. Despite international criticism, Trump remains steadfast in his support for Russian autocrat Vladimir Putin.

Leaders on both sides of the Atlantic have denounced Putin's unprovoked and unjustified aggression, including stationing troops in Crimea, Eastern, and Southern Ukraine. Putin has also promoted Ukraine as a former Russian colony and urged support for the ongoing conflict in his own country.

Trump acknowledged Putin's tactic of calling his troops "peacekeeping" forces and described it as "smart" and the "most powerful peacekeeping force I've ever seen." Trump has long admired strength over all else, and his recent comments align with his decade-long admiration for Putin.

In stark contrast, Trump has yet to condemn the regime threatening Europe's most significant military conflict since World War II. Instead, he has attacked President Biden while engaging in a conflict against America's allies.

For those seeking answers to Trump's behavior, the Second World War provides an appropriate reference point. During Trump's formative years at the New York Military Academy, Theodore Dobias, a soldier in the Allied's fierce Italian campaigns, served as a mentor. Dobias taught Trump the importance of respecting strength, a lesson that Trump applies to Putin today.

As a former President and the current leader of the Republican Party, Trump appears to have instilled in his supporters a respect for Putin's power. Trump's former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently called Putin "very smart, very capable" and expressed his immense admiration. Some in Congress and pro-Trump supporters in the 2014 conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which began when Putin invaded and annexed Crimea, will either use this opportunity to attack Biden or align themselves with Russia.

Pompeo has also acknowledged the Ukrainians as victims of the crisis, but it is a grim tradition in American politics for a leader to use such a crisis to praise Putin and criticize an opponent. Retired General Barry McCaffrey described Putin as a "brutal thug," comparing Putin's praise to the admiration of fascist Italian leader Benito Mussolini.

If there is anything more un-American than praising a dictator as he invades a neighboring democracy that is friendly to the United States, then this act certainly adds a layer of disgrace for personal political reasons.

During the same interview, Trump repeated his repeated lie that he was cheated out of his 2020 re-election. "Now, the problem is that the election was manipulated," Trump said. "The problem is a candidate who shouldn't be here, and someone who doesn't know what they're doing."

Despite Trump's firm stance, some Republicans have not only promoted his false statements but also broken long-standing tradition by not supporting the President during international conflicts. As Biden prepares to redeploy troops to protect NATO allies in Ukraine, the United States is not on Putin's side. Unfortunately, many prominent American politicians, including Trump, appear to be.

The current crisis is just the latest in a series of threats to democracies around the world led by the United States. According to the Freedom House think tank, freedoms "are under pressure worldwide." Perhaps it is no surprise that Trump, who has repeatedly praised authoritarians, now appears to be indifferent to protecting certain democracies.

This pattern is a travesty that shows once again that Trump does not understand the values for which America stands – democracy, freedom, and peace. And it is a further indication that he is leading many to embrace his cause.

The enrichment data suggests that Trump's support for Putin is due to several factors, including the adoption of a new geopolitical strategy that involves aligning with Russia to counter China, psychological traits shared with Putin such as narcissism and Machiavellianism, and public statements and actions that echo Russian disinformation campaigns. However, these actions have been met with significant international criticism and concern about their implications for Ukraine's sovereignty and security.
