What is your stance on immigration, Union?

In the political landscape of Germany, the Conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has taken a firm stance on migration under Chancellor Friedrich Merz's leadership. The CDU, in coalition with the Christian Social Union (CSU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has implemented a series of measures aimed at reducing illegal immigration and managing migration flows.

One of the key aspects of these policies is the extension of border controls, which allows for pushbacks and refusal of entry for asylum seekers without valid documentation. This measure is part of Germany's efforts to maintain enhanced border controls beyond September 2025, even after the EU’s external border system becomes fully operational.

Deportations have also seen a resurgence, particularly targeting rejected asylum seekers with criminal records from Afghanistan and Syria. Despite criticism from human rights groups, Germany has resumed deportations to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.

The CDU-led administration has also halted the refugee resettlement program and imposed a two-year suspension on family reunification for refugees with subsidiary protection status. These measures align with European Court of Human Rights rulings and underscore the CDU's commitment to migration control.

In an effort to reduce asylum approval rates, the government plans to expand its list of safe countries of origin, such as Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, and India. A proposed law would allow the government to designate safe countries via executive order without parliamentary or Bundesrat approval, expediting decisions and bypassing political opposition.

The CDU's stance on migration is clear: stricter border enforcement, faster asylum decisions, halted refugee resettlement, controlled family reunification, and promotion of deportations, even to countries with contested safety conditions. This shift from previous German governments aligns CDU with an increasingly hardline European migration policy framework.

However, the CDU must navigate a contradiction between stirring up sentiment against foreigners and the need for migration. As Germany seeks to lead Europe’s "rightward pivot" on migration policy, it is essential to find a balance that ensures border security while also promoting integration and preventing potential threats.

Meanwhile, the ongoing issue of migration is evident in the tri-border area of Serbia, Hungary, and Romania, where a towering NATO fence acts as a barrier for those without legal EU entry documents. Yet, migrants seem to be welcomed on the Romanian side of the border, with minimal obstacles in the fields.

The question remains whether these measures will effectively prevent migration, or if they will merely shift the routes taken by those seeking asylum. As the debate continues, one thing is clear: the CDU's commitment to restricting and controlling immigration will reshape Germany's and Europe’s migration landscape.
