What is the Identity of Shane Tamura, Perpetrator of the Manhattan Office Building Shooting?
In a shocking turn of events, a mass shooting took place in the heart of New York City on July 28, 2025. The perpetrator was identified as Shane Devon Tamura, a 27-year-old former high school football star and private investigator from Hawaii who later resided in Las Vegas.
Tamura, born in 1998 in Honolulu, Hawaii, had a distinguished football career, playing as a running back at Golden Valley High School and Granada Hills Charter in Los Angeles. He was recognized for his athletic talent, graduating in 2016. After high school, Tamura moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he worked as a private investigator.
However, Tamura had a documented history of mental health issues, including symptoms possibly linked to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease associated with repeated head trauma often seen in athletes. In 2022, he experienced at least two documented mental health incidents.
On July 28, Tamura embarked on a cross-country journey from Las Vegas, driving through several states including Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and New Jersey. He arrived at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, a building home to major corporate tenants such as the NFL and Blackstone.
In the lobby of the building, Tamura opened fire with an assault rifle, killing four people, including a security guard and an off-duty NYPD officer. He also critically injured one man. A suicide note, blaming the NFL and CTE for his mental health struggles, was found at the scene.
Tamura was found dead on the 33rd floor from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A car with Nevada license plates, registered to Tamura, was found at the scene. Inside, police found a rifle case with bullets, a loaded revolver, magazines, a backpack, and medicine prescribed to Tamura.
The shooting caused chaos in the area, with many police cars blocking the streets and a helicopter flying above. The situation is now under control, according to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
As investigations continue, questions remain about how Tamura obtained the firearm in light of his documented mental health incidents. So far, no criminal record has been found for Shane Tamura. The reason for the attack is still being investigated.
