The younger generation, generally referred to as Generation Z, isn't buying the old adage "work is half the battle." According to a survey conducted by Wirtschaftsjunioren Deutschland and reported by Deutsche Presse-Agentur, the promising career prospects and an excellent work-life balance are the top priorities for 81% and 74% of respondents respectively. Varied activities come in third at 71%.
Contrary to some clichés, only around half consider a high level of social meaning and purpose in their profession to be essential. Even the positive image of the profession and the opportunity to take on management responsibility lag behind, while setting up a business or becoming self-employed is least appealing to 40% of young people.
The survey also reveals that young people care about appreciation and praise from their superiors. Half of them prefer a boss who is open to change and appreciative. Professional competence comes in third place.
According to experts, the demand for a four-day week and more free time may seem strange to older generations, but at second glance, some of these demands might make sense. The pandemic has impacted the career paths of 30% of those surveyed.
The demand for apprenticeships fell during the coronavirus pandemic and hasn't recovered since, which affects Generation Z, who are in a strong negotiating position due to demographic change.
Regarding the factors prioritized by Generation Z, a regional management project in Freyung-Grafenau focuses on several key aspects:
- High-quality education and training opportunities, which include campaigns like "MADE in FRG – Traumberufe" and practical experience through internships.
- Innovative strategies for the future of work, which might imply an emphasis on creating a balanced work environment.
- Career development opportunities for businesses, which can help enhance the region's competitiveness.
- Sustainability and social responsibility, although not directly stated, might be an implied focus.
- A diverse and inclusive work environment, which is suggested by the project's aim of enhancing the region's attractiveness as an employment location.
