What classical music pieces are featured in the Netflix series, Squid Game Season 2?
In the highly-anticipated second season of Squid Game, viewers can expect a captivating blend of classical music and suspenseful storytelling, much like its successful predecessor.
The new season continues to feature a wide array of classical pieces, with "The Blue Danube" by Johann Strauss II remaining a prominent choice. However, this time around, Haydn's Trumpet Concerto 3rd movement, known as the wake-up theme in the series, also makes an appearance.
The soundtrack of Squid Game Season 2 also incorporates elements of late-Romantic classical music influence, such as works by Richard Strauss, adding a new layer of depth to the series' musical landscape.
As for opera, it finds its way into Season 2, with prominent opera songs used in Episode 1, further enhancing the blend of classical and theatrical musical styles.
Intriguingly, the new season also introduces a fusion of jazz and classical elements, blending dramatic themes with smooth melodies. This innovative approach not only enriches the musical texture but also adds an unexpected twist to the series.
"Time to Say Goodbye," originally released in 1995 under its Italian name Con te partirò, makes a significant appearance in Squid Game Season 2. This classic ballad, sung by Paul Potts in the series, is used in a nail-biting scene of Russian Roulette. Interestingly, in a unique interpretation, Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman perform the song in the series.
Another standout piece is "Nessun dorma," famously sung by Luciano Pavarotti in the opera Turandot. In Squid Game Season 2, this powerful aria is played during a game of 'Rock, Paper, Scissors' combined with 'Russian Roulette,' adding an extra layer of tension to the already intense scene.
Beyond these well-known classical pieces, Squid Game Season 2 also incorporates eerie reimaginings of childhood songs and minimalist classical-influenced compositions that heighten the unsettling atmosphere.
South Korean composer Jung Jae-il, a graduate of Seoul Jazz Academy and skilled in playing piano, guitar, bass, and drums, is the mastermind behind the music for Squid Game Season 2. Known for his work on Parasite (2019) and Okja (2017), Jung Jae-il has once again crafted a compelling and haunting soundtrack that perfectly complements the series' narrative.
Season 2 of Squid Game focuses on Seong Gi-hun's life after winning the Squid Game, promising a continuation of the gripping storyline that captivated audiences worldwide. The new season is set to be released on 30 December 2024.
