Unbelievable! - The Handball Bundesliga's Champion Tackles Foxes Star's Injury on the Road

Fair play isn't just a slogan in the Liqui Moly Handball Bundesliga; evidently, it's a way of life.

At the youthful age of 21, U21 world champion Matthes Langhoff of Füchse Berlin twisted his right foot during last Tuesday's Euro game in Chambery (36:31). With a subsequent Bundesliga match scheduled in Wetzlar for Thursday (36:30), there was no time for a thorough examination in Berlin. So, the examination had to be performed during the journey itself.

A marvelous performance by Füche's goalkeeper Dejan Milosavlje

Langhoff discussed his situation, "I realized immediately upon standing that something wasn’t right, and it was quite painful. I continued playing on attack, thinking I would recover overnight. However, things only worsened during the journey from Chambery to Frankfurt/Main." Langhoff's plea for help was met, and surprisingly, it was the opposing team, HSG Wetzlar, that offered assistance.

Dr. Marco Kettrukat and Frank Thiel, team physicians for HSG Wetzlar, conducted an immediate examination of Langhoff's injury. "They sent me straight to Giessen for an MRI and also provided me with crutches to help immobilize my foot with a cast."

The diagnosis was startling, "The deltoid ligament in my right foot is torn. I will be required to wear this cast for at least two weeks and will be sidelined for at least six weeks. I won't be able to return until the second half of the season. This is tough news, of course, as I am unable to assist my team at the moment."

Füchse Berlin is inching closer to a staffing crisis in their backcourt. Following Paul Drux's injury (Achilles tendon rupture) and now Matthes Langhoff's injury, Lasse Andersson finds himself without an alternative left-wing player. Langhoff said, "I have a good feeling that senior player Silas Overby will have to step in for me; he has helped us out on several occasions before."
