Thundering Through the Weekend: Germany's Stormy Saga

Western Regions Experiencing Persistent Warmth Throughout the Weekend

Offenbach (dpa) - Basked in the sunshine during the day, but braced for thunderstorms come the afternoon, Germany's weather kept its people on their toes over the weekend. A series of powerful thunderstorms, some intense enough to cause a stir, started moving in from the west and northwest as well as the southwestern mountains in Germany since late afternoon. The unsettled weather is predicted to continue into Sunday.

A representative from the German Weather Service (DWD) shared, "Since the early afternoon, we've had several thunderstorms – some quite heavy – from the Eifel region to the Cologne Bay and along the Lower Rhine." These storms have been shifting north or northeast throughout the evening. "Then, western Lower Saxony will be hit next," the spokesperson added.

The exact duration of these thunderstorms remains uncertain. "We'll have to wait and see if the day's course will put an end to the thunderstorms or if they'll hang on," said the DWD representative, hinting at the potential for lightning to continue even into the second half of the night.

The DWD in Offenbach issued a warning for large hail or hail accumulations, heavy rain, and gusty winds on Saturday. According to meteorologists, heavy gusts up to 100 kilometers per hour, heavy rain up to more than 40 liters per square meter in a short time, and large hail pose a threat of severe weather.

Temperatures were expected to rise to 28 to 35 degrees Celsius, with cooler temperatures in the north and northeast at 22 to 27 degrees Celsius. In the night from Saturday to Sunday, there will be an increase in thunderstorms in the western half, with heavy rain and hail as well as gusty winds up to 100 kilometers per hour. The lowest temperatures will be around 19 to 15 degrees Celsius, with higher temperatures in larger cities and cooler temperatures in the east and southeast.

Sunday showers and storms

Thunderstorms, some potentially severe, are expected on Sunday, particularly in the east and south, and initially in parts of the center. The DWD warns of heavy rain with over 40 millimeters in a short time and more than 50 liters per square meter in a few hours, as well as large hail and heavy gusts up to 100 kilometers per hour. Temperatures will reach sultry 27 to 33 degrees Celsius in the southeast, otherwise 20 to 27 degrees Celsius.
