Western Powers Pour Billions Into Africa’s Lobito Corridor to Rival China
The Lobito Corridor, a major transport route linking Angola to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia, has become a focal point for both European and US investment. The project, initially framed as a climate-transition initiative, is now seen as a key geoeconomic tool to counter China’s influence in African logistics. Recent developments show growing financial commitments and high-level diplomatic engagement from Western powers.
The European Union has taken a leading role through its Global Gateway initiative, pledging 150 billion euros for African infrastructure between 2021 and 2027. For the Lobito Corridor alone, Team Europe—a coordinated EU approach—has mobilised over 2 billion euros. The funding aims to boost sustainable infrastructure, regional trade links, and access to critical raw materials.
The Lobito Corridor now stands at the centre of Western efforts to reshape African logistics and resource access. With billions in funding, high-level visits, and infrastructure upgrades, the project reflects a broader push to counterbalance China’s influence. The next steps will depend on continued cooperation between Angola, the EU, and the US.
