Western ambassadors and Ukraine face escalating verbal attacks from Georgian Dream, a governing political party in Georgia.

The Caucasus region is currently experiencing a period of heightened tension, with Georgia at the centre of a diplomatic storm.

Recent developments have seen Georgia's Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, accusing Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) of ordering explosives to be smuggled into the country. This accusation was followed by targeted criticism of Ukraine, with Kobakhidze repeating the allegation that the individuals involved had received instructions from the SBU.

The Georgian government's stance was further defended by Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili, who suggested that the issue of EU integration has been used to influence Georgia's domestic politics. Botchorishvili also stated that the Georgian government has acted 'in good faith' to enable 'our citizens enjoy the benefits of visa-free travel'.

Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze has also entered the fray, suggesting the involvement of Georgian opposition groups in the matter, particularly in light of the upcoming municipal elections on 4 October.

Notably, Botchorishvili has singled out Dutch Ambassador Meline Arakelian for meeting with opposition politician Elene Khoshtaria before her arrest. This move has been met with criticism from Georgian Dream officials, who have been attacking EU ambassadors over alleged interference in domestic politics. Kobakhidze, in particular, referred to some EU ambassadors as ambassadors of hatred.

The EU has not been silent on these matters. They have repeatedly warned that Georgian Dream's current path threatens its visa-free status. This warning comes amidst reports of independent journalism in the region facing threats.

The Estonian Foreign Minister, Margus Tsahkna, has also weighed in on the situation, stating that the responsibility for the suspension of the visa-free status would fall on the Georgian government. However, as of publication, no response has been received from Ukraine regarding these allegations.

The political landscape in the Caucasus continues to shift, with tensions between Georgia and Ukraine at an all-time high. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how these developments will impact the region and its relations with the international community.
