A cloud of gnats descended upon Cal State Fullerton's Goodwin Field, but neither fans nor players let it hinder the excitement of the Division 2 championship game between West Ranch and Mater Dei. Hunter Manning, West Ranch's star pitcher, managed to shrug off the pesky insects, making history as he clinched the title with a 2-1 victory.
Manning, headed to UC Irvine, threw a remarkable 101 pitches and finished with 6 strikes and no walks. Despite an error in the seventh inning, he remained resilient, catching a pop up to secure the win and avoid a late comeback by Mater Dei.
Coach Ryan Lindgreen led West Ranch to its first championship in school history. Unfortunately, it was his last game as he steps down to spend more time with his three young children. Last season, Hart coach Jim Ozella pulled off the same feat before retiring. West Ranch has decided to sit out next week's Southern California regionals.
