England's Jofra Archer Out of West Indies Series Due to Injury

England's fast bowler Jofra Archer has been ruled out of the upcoming one-day international (ODI) series against the West Indies due to a right thumb injury. The series begins on May 29, and Archer will miss it.

Archer's injury occurred during the Indian Premier League with the Rajasthan Royals. He has been dealing with ongoing issues related to his back and elbow since his last Test appearance for England in February 2021.

In Archer's stead, England appointed Tymal Mills as his replacement for the ODI series. Mills has prior international experience in One Day Internationals. Additionally, Lancashire's left-arm seamer Luke Wood has been called up to the ODI squad.

The ODI series against the West Indies could have ramifications for England's prospects for qualification for the 2027 World Cup. The top eight teams in the official world rankings as of March 2027 will qualify directly, and currently, England and the West Indies are positioned eighth and ninth, respectively.

Harry Brook will be England's new white-ball captain for the upcoming ODI series. The ODI squad includes Brook, Gus Atkinson, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Jos Buttler, Brydon Carse, Ben Duckett, Tom Hartley, Will Jacks, Saqib Mahmood, Jamie Overton, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, and Luke Wood.

The first ODI of the series between England and the West Indies will take place on May 29 at Edgbaston (d/n) at 13:00 BST. The second ODI will take place on June 1 at Cardiff at 11:00 BST, and the third ODI will take place on June 3 at The Kia Oval (d/n) at 13:00 BST.

Meanwhile, Archer is set to miss at least the initial game of the series, marking his return to red-ball cricket for the first time in four years. His absence is notable as he was excluded from the squad for the subsequent three-match T20 series.

The first T20 international of the series will take place on June 6 at Seat Unique Riverside, Chester-le-Street (d/n) at 18:30 BST. The second T20 international will take place on June 8 at Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol at 14:30 BST. The third T20 international will take place on June 10 at Utilita Bowl, Southampton (d/n) at 18:30 BST.

The T20 squad for the series includes Brook (captain), Rehan Ahmed, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Jos Buttler, Brydon Carse, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Saqib Mahmood, Jamie Overton, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, and Luke Wood.

England's medical team will reassess Archer over the next fortnight to determine when he may return to action.
