West Hollywood facing strong opposition for lowered flags in honor of Charlie Kirk
In a recent turn of events, two cities, West Hollywood in California and Madison, New Jersey, have found themselves at the centre of a heated debate following the lowering of flags in response to a presidential proclamation.
The controversy began when President Donald Trump ordered U.S. flags on the White House and all public buildings and grounds to be lowered to half-staff on September 10, 2025, to honour Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. The City of West Hollywood, following the President's direction, lowered its flags, but swiftly clarified that this action should not be interpreted as an expression of alignment with, or endorsement of, Kirk's political views or actions.
However, the decision did not sit well with everyone. A sign was erected in Matthew Shepard Square in West Hollywood, protesting the city's decision, calling Kirk a "racist, transphobic, homophobic, Nazi-loving monster." The city defended its decision, stating that it was in response to the presidential proclamation and not an endorsement of Kirk's views.
Meanwhile, the City of Madison, New Jersey, decided to fly flags at half-staff on Presidents Day, but faced criticism for its decision not to lower flags in response to the presidential proclamation. The city defended its stance by following the State of New Jersey's daily flag status.
The City of West Hollywood is now considering updates to its policy regarding the lowering of flags to ensure it reflects the values of the West Hollywood community. The Borough of Madison, on the other hand, remains committed to bringing people together around shared values and ideals.

It's worth noting that this incident was not without other related events. An employee of FEMA was placed on leave for stating that flags should not be at half-staff for "racist homophobe" Charlie Kirk. Unfortunately, Charlie Kirk was assassinated during a campus event at Utah Valley University last week.
The City of West Hollywood's action, as well as the subsequent reactions, serve as a reminder of the divisive nature of politics and the importance of understanding and respecting diverse viewpoints. As always, it is crucial to promote dialogue and unity in such times.
