West experiencing high temperatures this weekend
Saturday in Germany brought out the sun, but then booming thunderstorms started rolling in from the west and northwest. These storms are expected to persist into the evening, with western Lower Saxony next in line.
The German Weather Service (DWD) reported several heavy storms, some quite intense, from the Eifel region to the Cologne Bay and along the Lower Rhine. However, it's unclear how long these storms will continue. According to the DWD spokesperson, it depends on whether the daily cycle brings an end to the thunderstorms or if they hold on for a while longer, which could mean lightning until the second half of the night.
On Saturday, the DWD issued a warning for large hail, heavy rain, and gusty winds. Meteorologists warn that heavy gusts can reach up to 100 km/h, intense heavy rain can exceed 40 liters per square meter in a short time, and large hail could pose a risk of severe weather.
Temperatures are expected to climb from 28 to 35 degrees Celsius, with cooler temperatures of 22 to 27 degrees Celsius in the north and northeast. Overnight into Sunday, there could be an increase in thunderstorms in the western half of the country, with heavy rain, hail, and gusty winds.
Sunday may also bring more thunderstorms, potentially leading to severe weather, particularly in the east and south. The DWD warns of heavy rain exceeding 40 millimeters in a short time and more than 50 liters per square meter in a few hours, as well as large hail and heavy gusts reaching 100 km/h. Temperatures are expected to soar to 27 to 33 degrees Celsius in the southeast and 20 to 27 degrees Celsius elsewhere.
However, there are currently no specific forecasts indicating severe thunderstorms with heavy rain, hail, and strong winds for Sunday night and overnight into Monday. The European weather is expected to transition from cooler conditions to warmer ones, with potential for various weather systems to develop. Germany is anticipated to experience hot weather, starting from the middle of June, with temperatures significantly above average.
For the most current predictions, it's recommended to check local weather forecasts or services like the Met Office or Ventusky. Frankfurt's forecast, for example, shows low chances of precipitation and generally calm conditions for the next few days. If severe weather is predicted, it would likely be announced by local weather services or news outlets as the event approaches.
The German Weather Service (DWD) warns that the intense thunderstorms, which started in the west and northwest of Germany, may continue through the evening, as reported by the DWD spokesperson. Additionally, the DWD expects more thunderstorms on Sunday, particularly in the east and south, where they could result in severe weather conditions, including heavy rain, large hail, and gusty winds up to 100 km/h.
