West Experiences Unrelenting Heatwave, Persisting Over Weekend
Hot, Stormy Summer: With the mercury climbing above 30°C mid-June, Germany is bracing for a change, and it ain't for the better. After a brief spell of sunshine on Saturday, the weather took a turn for the worse as scattered thunderstorms roared in from the west and northwest, even storming over the southwest German mountains. The stormy weather doesn't seem to be letting up just yet.
According to the meteorologists at the German Weather Service (DWD), some of the thunderstorms that rolled in on Saturday were quite intense, stretching from the Eifel region to Cologne Bay and along the Lower Rhine. By evening, it's expected that western Lower Saxony will feel the thunderous wrath.
Still Waiting on Mother Nature: The duration of the thunderstorms remains uncertain. DWD spokesperson said they'll need to see if the diurnal cycle will end the thunderstorms or if they'll hold their ground, potentially extending the stormy spectacle well into the night.
The DWD had issued alerts on Saturday, warning of large hail, heavy rain, and gusty winds. Heavy gusts up to 100 kilometers per hour, intense rainfalls of over 40 liters per square meter in a short time, and large hailstones pose a risk of severe weather, according to the meteorologists.
Temperature Sweep: Daytime temperatures, for the most part, will reach 28 to 35°C, while the north and northeast will see temps between 22 to 27°C. The coldest spots will be around 19 to 15°C, with cities likely to stay a bit warmer, at around 21°C, and the east and southeast projected to be the chilliest areas, at 13°C.
Nighty Night, Not So Peaceful: Beware weekend sleepers—the night of Saturday to Sunday will see increased chances of thunderstorms in the western half of Germany. Heavy rainfalls of over 25 liters per square meter in a short time or over 40 liters per square meter in a few hours could be possible, along with hail and gusty winds up to 100 kilometers per hour.
Sunday Sundown, Monday Showdown: Stormy weather persists into Sunday, particularly in the east and south, and initially in parts of the center. The DWD warns of heavy rainfalls of over 40 millimeters in a short time and over 50 liters per square meter in a few hours, as well as large hail and powerful gusts up to 100 kilometers per hour. Temperatures will reach a scorching 27 to 33°C in the southeast, while the rest will bask in a more reasonable 20 to 27°C. A respite from the bad weather is on the horizon by Monday. The sky will start to clear in the west by the end of the day, with the majority of the country enjoying mostly pleasant conditions the following day, with high temperatures of 20 to 26°C.
The stormy weather, as predicted by the German Weather Service (DWD), continues to pose a risk with heavy gusts, intense rainfall, and large hailstones, particularly in the western half of Germany. On the other hand, the science behind environmental-science and weather indicates that daytime temperatures will soar, with the southeast experiencing 27 to 33°C, while the north and northeast will be comparatively cooler at 22 to 27°C.
