Welcome to Jenin City, a place battling relentless turmoil and hardship in the northern West Bank.
Recently, Jenin City has become the epicenter of ongoing military conflicts.[1] The Israeli military has been persistently engaged in the city for over two months, specifically focusing on the historical Palestinian resistance reservoir—the Jenin refugee camp.[1]
These military operations have led to widespread disruption and destruction.[4] In January, the camp suffered a major blow when Israeli forces targeted it, setting the stage for a massive demolition akin to the urban devastation seen in Gaza.[4] Previously, parts of the camp had been destroyed back in 2002, during the second Intifada.[4]
This time around, at least 600 houses have been either fully or partially destroyed or burned to the ground.[4] Approximately 3,000 families, homes to over 16,000 people, have been forced to relocate.[4] The military has deliberately blocked access to crucial infrastructure such as roads, hospitals, electrical networks, water supplies, and sewage systems, affecting agricultural irrigation as well.[4]
An Economy Under Siege
These military operations and the subsequent restrictions have crippled the regional economy. With frequent invasions and demolitions, commerce has all but vanished, and unemployment and poverty rates have soared.[4]
Israeli forces have also razed commercial structures in neighboring towns, further diminishing local commerce and livelihoods.[4] The growing humanitarian crisis in the West Bank fuels the instability and economic struggles faced by Jenin City.[3][5]
A Surge in Settler Violence
Jenin City is by no means an exception to the escalating violence amongst settlers and Palestinians. Settler attacks against Palestinians have seen an unprecedented rise, with injury rates at their highest in at least two decades.[2][5]
