Weseler Auestadion Hosts 2026 Special Olympics Qualifiers
Get Ready for the Special Olympics Tour in Wesel!
Mark your calendars! The Special Olympics Sports Tour is touchin' down at Wesel's Westenergie Auestadion in mid-June. Here's a lowdown on the thrilling events in store:
After a decade of dedicated inclusion, gamers with intellectual disabilities from across North Rhine-Westphalia, aged eight and up, are geared up to flex their muscles in an epic showdown of Boccia, Traditional Football (or Soccer, if you prefer), Small Field Football, Athletics, and possibly some newbies like cycling, inline skating, or tennis (although we need more deets on the Wesel event). Applications for a spot in these competitions must be submitted by the end of March to prove your mettle and secure a position.
At a whopping 200 athletes strong, accompanied by 60 staff and coaches, it's gonna be an unforgettable experience at the Wesel Sports Tour. Among them, a buncha fierce competitors hail from the inclusion-friendly SV Rees, who'll even field their own Football team of 12 players! 🔥
But wait, there's more! 10-year-old Stefania and 14-year-old Finja, students at the "Schule am Ring" in Wesel, will be representing Athletics in the tour. Their dedicated coaches, Jörg Prumbs and Florian Büttner, confirmed that the team trains hard every Friday, prepping for gold at the Auestadion. The Schule am Ring will be well-represented, with another girl and boy lacing up their shoes and putting in work for the tour.
The fun doesn't stop with simply competing. This special event qualifies the participants for the "Special Olympics 2026" National Games in Saarland. Don't miss out on your chance to support the athletes during the competitions on Sat and Sun, with festivities kick-starting at 10 am on Sat with the opening ceremony.
As a huge supporter of diversity and inclusion, Westenergie has been backing the SONRW for a decade, with Brigitte Vogt, Marketing Director, declaring "We're all about promoting inclusivity in sports and showing the flag for diversity. Special Olympics is our ideal partner."
The sports extravaganza is completely free for the public to attend, so soak up the atmosphere, cheer 'em on, and witness the power of inclusion in action! With a ton of spectacles planned, there's no shortage of entertainment. Want to be a part of the action? Volunteers are still needed, so contact [email protected] to get involved! 👋🏿👋🏿
