Bye-Bye Werder, Hello Steffen: New Coach Announced!

Werder Instantly Parts Ways with Coach Werner

It's a fresh chapter for Werder Bremen as they bid adieu to Ole Werner and welcome Horst Steffen as their new head coach. werder's official announcement came on Tuesday, following rumors circulating in the media outlets. With Werner's contract expiring in June 2026, the decision to part ways was made after an emergency meeting on Monday evening, also resulting in the release of assistant coaches Patrick Kohlmann, Tom Cichon, and Hannes Drews.

Werder's football manager Clemens Fritz expressed regret over Werner's departure but deemed it necessary for the club's future: "We need continuity and clarity on the position of head coach for the future, so we have decided to release Ole."

A Sudden Shift, Not a Surprise

While the announcement may not have caught everyone off guard, Werner's exit might leave many supporters disappointed. Nevertheless, they are likely resigned to the fact that another season under the current circumstances would have been tough for all parties involved. In just under six months after taking up his post in Bremen, Werner had significantly improved the club and led them back to the Bundesliga and secured their place a year later.

Werder's New Leading Man: Horst Steffen

Contrary to initial speculations, Horst Steffen, coach of SV Elversberg, was appointed as Werder's new head coach. With SV Elversberg having missed out on promotion to the top flight after a 1:2 loss against 1. FC Heidenheim, Steffen had yet to comment on his future plans.

Werner on the Move?

Although the Bremen bosses would have liked to extend Werner's contract long-term, the differing views on squad planning and future sporting ambitions between the club and Werner led to tensions. With Werner not renewing his contract, he is now a hot candidate for several Bundesliga clubs, including RB Leipzig, VfL Wolfsburg, 1. FC Cologne, and FC Augsburg, all of which are currently in search of new coaches[3].
