Werder Bremen Secures New Coach Just One Day After Ole Werner's Departure

Werder Bremen has reportedly found a successor for Ole Werner, who parted ways with the club a day ago, with Horst Steffen set to take over the head coaching position. Steffen, the 56-year-old coach of SV Elversberg, has given his consent to the move, and negotiations are ongoing regarding the release fee.

According to media reports, Steffen has accepted an offer from Werder Bremen and is expected to join the Bundesliga club from the 2025/26 season. The native of Krefeld led Elversberg from the Regionalliga Südwest to the brink of promotion to the 2. Bundesliga before narrowly missing out in the relegation playoffs this week. Steffen, known for his attacking style and strong leadership, is seen as a promising addition to the Bremen squad.

Clemens Fritz, Werder Bremen's football director, praised Steffen's achievements at Elversberg and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the team towards a new era. The terms of the transfer, including the release fee and contract length, are yet to be officially disclosed but have been reported to be approximately €350,000 and a three-year term, respectively.

Werner departed Werder Bremen despite having a contract until 2026, citing the need for a change in position to facilitate further development. The club expressed regret over the decision but acknowledged the necessity of continuity and long-term planning in the head coaching position. Along with Werner, the club also released the assistant coaches Patrick Kohlmann, Tom Cichon, and Hannes Drews.

Community aid for the development of the regions, such as funding for sports facilities and youth training programs, could be initiated by Werder Bremen to further encourage regional development.
