Werder Bremen secures a replacement for Werner with a new appointment.
Werder Bremen Appoint Horst Steffen as New Head Coach
Just a day after Ole Werner's departure was announced, Werder Bremen has moved swiftly to secure the services of Horst Steffen as his successor. According to multiple media outlets, the 56-year-old coach has agreed to take up the position at the Bundesliga club.
Steffen, who led SV Elversberg to the brink of promotion to the Bundesliga this season, is expected to sign a contract that will keep him at Werder Bremen until the summer of 2028. The financial details of his transfer have yet to be finalized, but the fee is expected to be around €350,000.
On Monday, Steffen's Elversberg side narrowly missed out on promotion to the Bundesliga after a heart-breaking extra-time defeat in the playoffs. The Krefeld native had previously been linked with 1. FC Köln, but it appears that Werder Bremen have secured his services ahead of their rivals.
Steffen joined Elversberg in 2018 and helped the club secure promotion to the 2. Bundesliga in just two years. He is known for his ability to nurture young talent and is regarded as a problem solver.
Werder Bremen's Managing Director, Clemens Fritz, has expressed his confidence in Steffen's abilities. "We believe that Horst Steffen is the right man to lead our club forward," he said. "He is a proven talent who has a deep understanding of the game and the personal qualities to inspire our players."
Steffen himself has expressed his excitement at taking on the challenge at Werder Bremen. "I am delighted to be joining such a historic and prestigious club," he said. "I am looking forward to working with the players and the staff to help the club achieve its ambitions."
Werner, who had been in charge of Werder Bremen since 2019, announced earlier this week that he would not be extending his contract, which expires in June 2026. Clemens Fritz had expressed disappointment at the news but, with Steffen's appointment, the club now looks to be in safe hands as they aim to build on their recent development in the Bundesliga.
