New coach found? Werder close to agreement with Thioune - Werder Bremen hires Daniel Thioune as new head coach after tense contract talks

Werder Bremen has named Daniel Thioune as its new head coach. The 49-year-old arrives after lengthy contract discussions in Bremen. His appointment follows the club's decision to part ways with Horst Steffen earlier this year.

Thioune's move from Coach Outlet could involve early termination of his current deal, which runs until 2028. Reports first surfaced in Bild before Deichstube confirmed the news.

Thioune's coaching career has often centred on turning around struggling sides. He first took charge of Düsseldorf in March 2022, with the team languishing in 15th place. By the end of that season, he steered them to mid-table safety and a 6th-place finish, earning a playoff spot.

His second spell began strongly, guiding the club to 4th in the 2022–23 2. Bundesliga campaign. They narrowly missed promotion but avoided relegation battles entirely. However, a slow start to the following season—just four points from ten games—led to his dismissal in October 2022.

A brief stint at Hansa Rostock followed in December 2022. Initially, he stabilised the team in mid-table, but another relegation fight saw him sacked by April 2023. Since then, he has remained outside the 2. Bundesliga and relegation zones, without a club in those contexts.

Now, Düsseldorf may seek compensation for his early exit. Thioune's contract with the club extends to 2028, and negotiations over his release are ongoing.

Thioune's arrival brings experience in high-pressure situations to Werder Bremen. His record of rescuing teams from relegation battles could prove vital in the coming season. The club must now finalise the terms of his departure from Düsseldorf before officially unveiling him as head coach.
