Mesut Özil, a past gem of Werder Bremen, won the club's last title in 2014. However, the 2014 World Cup winner finds himself unwelcome at his former stomping ground. Additionally, another former club icon will also be a no-show at the legends' gathering.

According to a Bild report, Mesut Özil and Tim Wiese will be absent from the farewell match of Werder Bremen's former playmaker, Diego. It appears their names are not on the participant or guest list.

"We've agreed with Diego not to invite Mesut to the event, as he's taken a path in recent times that clashes with Werder Bremen's values," a club representative shared with Bild.

As for Wiese, the news is that he hasn't been invited to Diego's farewell match, with the decision communicated to Diego. Moreover, Wiese has publicly stated that he wants nothing to do with Werder Bremen anymore[1].

Diego, the Man of the Past

Diego, a Brazilian, played for Werder Bremen from 2006 to 2009 and won the DFB-Pokal with Özil and Wiese in 2009. He recently retired and will host his farewell match at the Weserstadion on March 22 (6 p.m., Sky).

The Controversial Journey of Özil

Mesut Özil, now 36, has expressed no secrecy about his support for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Last year, he posted a controversial map of Israel on Instagram, renaming the country "Palestine". He also caused a stir with a shirtless photograph that had a tattoo featuring three half-moons and a howling wolf, symbols often associated with the "Grey Wolves", a movement known for its racist-nationalist ideology[2].

Wiese, on the other hand, has been embroiled in a dispute with Werder Bremen for quite some time. The club had previously banned him from the stadium, a ban that will lift on December 31, 2023.

  1. Despite being a former talisman for Werder Bremen, Mesut Özil finds himself at odds with his former football club's values, as he is not invited to the farewell match of his ex-teammate Diego.
  2. Tim Wiese, another former icon of Werder Bremen, is also not invited to Diego's farewell match, as he has publicly severed ties with his former football club.
  3. The Turkish Football Federation (DFB) might consider extending a welcome to Mesut Özil, as his controversial journey in German football leaves his former football club behind.
