Welcoming Home Hero: Edan Alexander, Previously Captured by Hamas, Receives Warm Welcome in New Jersey

Frontline reporter Nate Foy covers the heartwarming homecoming of Edan Alexander, the young man returned home after 584 days of captivity in Gaza.

Bursting through the rain-soaked streets of Tenafly, New Jersey on Thursday, the eagerly awaited face of Edan Alexander shone from the passenger seat of a black SUV, flanked by a jubilant police motorcade and cheering supporters. This twenty-one-year-old, who spent nearly 600 days abducted by Hamas, was finally making his long-awaited return to the community that never lost hope.

Jubilant residents waved American and Israeli flags, holding hand-crafted signs of encouragement as they lined the streets.

"Our community has prayed for him for 585 days," said Rabbi Mordechai Shain, who's been connected to Alexander since he was but two years old. "We had marches every week, each one like a weekly reminder of our prayers."

Born and raised in Tenafly, New Jersey, Alexander ventured to Israel at eighteen, eager to don the uniform of the Israeli Defense Forces' Golani Brigade. He spent his days amongst fellow soldiers at Kibbutz Hazor, far away from the comforts of home.

Unfortunately, tragedy struck on October 7, 2023, when Hamas terrorists kidnapped Alexander during their devastating assault on southern Israel.

After 19 long months of negotiations, Alexander was finally set free, a development praiseworthy of the tireless efforts of Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, and Special Hostage Envoy Adam Boehler.

Rabbi Shain, whose friendship with Alexander dates back to his childhood, described the young man as a soul of quiet kindness.

"Even as a little boy, he was the one who would help others unnoticed," the rabbi reminisced. It was this selflessness, unfortunately, that led to his capture, as Alexander's act of giving his friend a shift, allowing him to go home that fateful day, resulted in his own kidnapping.

During his time in captivity, Alexander's hometown of Tenafly and the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades rallied together in support of the young man and his family. Despite the great distance, the community emotionally bonded with Alexander, viewing him as "everyone’s child" feeling accountable for his safe return.

Gathered in his absence for weekly vigils, prayers, and celebrations, Tenafly residents never let their spirits wane. On Hanukkah, over 800 members of the community partook in a birthday celebration to honor Alexander in the midst of his captivity.

With concerns still lingering for the hostages who remain in Gaza, the Tenafly community looks forward to Edan's recovery and healing. While Alexander is expected to remain in New Jersey, Alexander’s family rabbi described his return as an injury "God-given miracle."

  1. Despite the emotional relief brought by Edan Alexander's homecoming, the community remains concerned for the hostages still in Gaza, demonstrating a continued interest in international politics and global conflicts that affect the lives of innocent people.
  2. As a lover of sports, Edan Alexander might find solace in analyzing American Football, particularly the NFL, as it provides a different yet engaging distraction from his experiences, offering a new hobby to explore in his journey towards recovery.

Sports analysts could explore the parallels between leadership in American Football and the negotiation skills demonstrated by Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Special Hostage Envoy Adam Boehler in securing Edan Alexander's freedom, highlighting the importance of perseverance, teamwork, and strategic planning in both domains.
