Weimer Advocates for Dismantling Google as the Ideal Move
In a bold move, Culture State Minister Wolfram Weimer of Germany has called for the breakup of US tech giant Google. Weimer made his comments during an interview on the "Berlin Playbook" podcast by Politico on Friday.
Weimer criticised Google for its tax evasion and market dominance, stating that the company makes billions in Germany with large margins but avoids taxes by routing funds through Dublin. He argued that Google's practices threaten free opinion formation and democratic foundations in Germany.
The minister also expressed concern about the market power of Google, which he believes threatens democracy in Germany by changing the media landscape. According to Weimer, Google sucks up local radio, television, and print media, potentially undermining the diversity of opinions and the democratic process.
Weimer's call for action is not limited to Google. He also advocates for stronger regulation at the EU level to address the practices of US tech companies, including Google, Amazon, Apple, Meta (Facebook), and Microsoft. These companies, according to Weimer, are affecting the EU's digital landscape and need to be held accountable for their actions.
The minister's comments come at a time when the US government has been demanding changes to the strict EU digital laws for some time. In response, Weimer believes the European Union needs to do much more in terms of regulation to combat the spread of misinformation on platforms like X and to ensure fair competition.
US President Donald Trump has previously threatened state retaliation after an EU antitrust fine against Google. Trump has also stated that he would initiate a procedure for new tariffs if US companies are charged again. However, it is unclear how these threats may impact the ongoing discussions about the regulation of US tech companies in Europe.
Weimer's call for the breakup of Google and stronger regulation of US tech companies is an independent politician's viewpoint. He did not specify what specific regulations he believes the EU should implement, but his comments underscore the growing concern about the power and influence of US tech companies in Europe and the potential impact on democracy and media diversity.
