Senate: Kai Wegner lose in fence argument with Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district
In chatty tones, Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) confessed to the House of Representatives on Thursday that negotiating a fence around Görlitzer Park has hit a snag. "Sorry to disappoint you, y'all, but we're still far from reaching an agreement with the district," he said, slicing through any room for miscommunication.
Critics argue that the park, infamous for criminal activity in Kreuzberg, has transcended a mere trouble spot, devolving into a hotbed of unrest. Wegner, though, remains focused on restoring tranquility, reassuring that, once the park is under control, any fence-related conversations may commence. "But don't you worry," he cautioned, "we're not about to turn a blind eye."
During the plenary session, Left Party representative Katalin Gennburg sought clarification on how the Senate intended to circumvent the fence construction resistance. "We're not about to shatter anybody's dreams, sister," said Wegner, softening his tone. He spoke of his intention to safeguard leisurely strolls through the park for the silver-haired set.
This intention birthed a security summit in September, where Wegner and district mayors from Mitte and Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg consented on a host of measures. These measures went well beyond fence installation, although the fence debate continues to stir dissension. "Broad agreement on social measures," Wegner affirmed, "but the fence discussion is still quite heated."
The much talked about fence construction has been the subject of scorn, with district mayor Clara Herrmann (Greens) labeling it symbolic politics. Local residents and the district parliament have long clamored for solutions that tackle their concerns sustainably.
