Household - Wegner: Reliability, Stability, and Internal Security at the Forefront

Kai Wegner, Berlin's Governing Mayor, has stood firm against criticism of the 2024/2025 double budget. Emphasizing the need for stability and certainty in uncertain times, Wegner declared, "This is exactly what the Black-Red coalition stands for." Moreover, the coalition is prioritizing internal security and will ensure better equipment for the police and fire department.

Wegner announced upcoming investments in tasers, bodycams, firefighting robots, and drones to address public safety issues. Adding, "We are giving the emergency services what they need. We protect those who protect Berlin." He expressed plans to bolster the judiciary and public prosecutor's office by creating new job opportunities.

Controversial topics and criticisms have been met with resolve. Despite Green Party accusations of delayed progress in transportation policy, Wegner remains steadfast, assuring lawmakers that their initiatives, including the construction of a fence in Görlitzer Park, will be addressed. While the district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg has voiced opposition, Wegner remains committed to ensuring security in the park.

The 2024 and 2025 budget total 39.3 billion and 40.5 billion euros respectively, the highest expenditure levels ever. Allocations to districts, personnel, and investments are priorities, with reserves serving as the primary financing mechanism, despite the debt brake.

Senate Committee resolutions favor a myriad of issues, including the construction industry, environmental policies, and urban developments. The proposed constitutional amendment on voter eligibility at 16 is significant, as well as amendments to the Police Act, building regulations, and university contract agreements.

Enrichment Data Integration:

While Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner delivers his defense of the budget, it's worth noting the city's recent focus on infrastructure investments. Over the next ten years, the Berlin Senate for Urban Development, Building, and the Environment (BSW) aims to support 4,000 schools with a budget of 20 billion euros, addressing the pressing need for school renovations and modernization[3].

The broader political climate in Germany is marked by ongoing concerns about asylum rules, migration, and the impact of international events on European relations[2]. Building on this, the Black-Red coalition's commitment to internal security and strengthening the judiciary aligns with the need to protect and support those tasks that serve the welfare of Berlin and its citizens.
