Demands Compensation for Implemented Relief Package: Wegner's Perspective - Wegner advocates for financial reimbursement in the aid package

Hey there! Look who's back in the spotlight - Berlin's Mayor, Kai Wegner (CDU), insisting on financial reimbursement for states because of the economic relief package proposed by the federal government. During a recent chat with "T-Online," he spilled the beans, saying that while he's all for the federal government's moves to decrease energy costs and slash taxes, these same sweetheart deals are bound to leave a mark on his state's purse as well as everyone else's.

The federal government's relief package in the works boasts enhanced depreciation tax allowances for businesses buying machinery, equipment, and electric vehicles. Come 2028, corporate tax rates will be dialed back. But, here's the kicker - these fiscal favors from the feds will lead to losses of revenue for states and municipalities, a reality that the feds and the states need to hash out together - back in Berlin.

Guess what? States and cities are swimming in budget headaches, just like the feds, so Wegner's sentiment is, "Who divvies up the goods, pays the bill." He begged the feds to adopt the golden rule: "He who incurs the expense, shoulders the cost." A fair division of the burdens, Wegner argued, is the name of the game.

When asked if a solution could be on the table as early as the Minister President Conference this coming Wednesday (18.06), Wegner nodded optimistically, hinting that he's confident Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the feds get a clue about the pressure states are under.

In a missive to Chancellor Merz, the CDU State Presidents called for a formulaic, permanent, and indisputable mechanism that offers financial assistance to states if federal statutes cause increased spending or reduced income for the states and municipalities. Their proposed solution? Let the states receive a larger share of the value-added tax.
